Dauphine Bakery and Bistro to close doors at month’s end

I have had a sad note from Linda Kearney. The most excellent baker of high-quality breads, tarts and other exquisite sweets is closing Dauphine Bakery and Bistro.

The last day for the shop, owned and run by Kearney and her husband, Paul Bumanis, is Aug. 27. Thereafter, Dauphine can be found until the end of the market season at both the City Market and the 124 Grand Market, where the business has had booths for some time.

Kearney cites an unresolvable issue with the landlord as the reason for the closure.

“At the end of the day we are leaving what we love for a very uncertain future,” says Kearney in her note. “All I ever wanted was to make simple, honest, well-executed food. It was just food, but for us it has been everything.”

This is a loss for the food community in Edmonton, as there are not nearly enough excellent bakers to fill our bellies. I will personally miss Linda’s lemon tart. Kearney says they would like to open elsewhere, but having invested $100,000 in upgrades to the present location, it might not be financially possible to bring Dauphine back.

I wish Linda and Paul all the very best as they negotiate this next part of their business lives together.
